The rest of Bridge to Terabitha

Well, Terabitha stayed in the imaginations of Jess and Leslie although as the book progressed a person could begin to picture Terabitha and better understand the magic it held for these two friends. Now...I sigh, *sigh*, there is a turn in the book that completely surprised me although it reminded me of the movie My Girl, but opposite (In the movie the boy dies and the girls lives). Why oh why did Leslie have to die?

Actually I handled that part of the book well until Jess started to realize all the beauty that Leslie had opened his eyes to see and how he passes that beauty on to another in her honor-that's when the dam broke and the tears just poured down my face. Of course it doesn't help that I had gotten some troubling news about my brother's health about an hour earlier. However, this is still a beautiful story and after I dryed my tears and blew my nose, I handed it to my ten year old daughter and told her she ought to read it-sadness and all. She was a little surprised that I would hand her a book that had made me cry-but then after I explained why the book was beautiful she understood. The book is not about Leslie's death, it's about the power of friendship and the beauty and new experiences friends bring into one another's lives and the encouragement we receive to take chances when we have amazing friends at our backs.

Bridge to Terabitha by Katherine Paterson

This week I started reading Bridge to Terabitha. It came out as a movie not too long ago and I've always been curious about it so I figured this was as good of a time as any to read it.

So far it really hasn't been at all like what I expected. I thought it was going to be another one of those situations where a person finds a hidden tunnel or something that leads them to an alternate world. In this book I've met the two main characters and learned some about their lives but so far Terabitha seems to be an imaginary place rather than an alternate world they go to visit. Of course, I'm only about half way through the book so there's still time for my prediction to come to fruition. I'm curious to see if it will, or if the author has other surprises for her readers. This book has a lot to do with relationships. Jesse's relationship with his sisters, his mother and his father as well as his relationship with his school mates and Leslie. It also touches on Leslie's relationship with her parents. Terabitha seems to be an escape from all of those relationships except the bond between Jesse and Leslie which seems to be the only non-strained relationship in this book so far. It will be interesting to see where Katherine Paterson goes with this or if I am completely misreading into this book.

The rest of Zach's Lie

Ha! I knew there was more to that custodian. It turns out that custodian was not his first profession, although, I won't say what was because that would spoil the story. The rest of the book was really good and I will recommend it to my daughter-it's such an easy read, she'll probably finish it in a day or two.

My friend warned me that there's a bit of a twist to the book and I must admit that she was right, it wasn't the ending I expected, but it was still a good story. Do I have your interest piqued yet?

Zach's Lie

This week I started reading the book Zach's Lie by Roland Smith. This book is actually written for probably the fourth grade on up age range but I thought it looked interesting so decided to take a look.

So far in this book Zach has been placed in the Witness Security Program after his Dad was arrested for drugs and Zach's families' lives are placed in danger by the drug lord. Zach's mom and sister seem to be dealing with the changes fairly well but it seems that when Zach's name changed, so did his personality. Zach has become aggressive whereas Jack (his real name) was much more passive in his behavior.

It seems though, that the town to which they've relocated may prove to have been a good choice. The local people have a deep seated culture that could be a great source of healing if Zach allows it too. Also, the school custodian seems to be just the type of person Zach needs in his life at this time.

In a way though, the custodian seems almost too good to be true and I can't help but wonder if he is a witness security program plant that was placed there years ago to keep an eye on WSP families that relocate to Elko. Also, the drug lord just found out where they are and I'm only a couple of chapters into the book so I'm curious to find out how this will all play out.

So far this book has been really good and one that I would even let my 10 year old daughter read. However, I won't recommend it to her until I reach the end-just in case.
